History

Origins and Early History (3000 BCE - 500 CE)

Dating as far back as the 16th century, carpet weaving was found in the mountainous regions of the East stretching from Turkey through Persia and Central Asia into China.
The process of carpet-weaving involves the fleece of sheep and long, fine hair from camels and goats, being woven on huge looms by hand. The fleece or silk used is dyed with traditional vegetable dyes (more subtle color tones) or modern aniline dyes (brighter color tones) and then woven.
Oriental rugs are either flat-woven or hand-knotted, in flat-woven, pile-less rugs, horizontal and vertical threads from both the rug itself and the design. In hand-knotted rugs, strands of fleece are tied into flat-woven fabric, creating a pile and pattern.
The degree of quality and value of a modern rugs or an antique rug varies by the type of material used and the number of knots per square inch of surface. This could vary from 40 to 1,000. Silk rugs are judged in the same way with the higher amounts of knots per square inch the better in quality and value. From this foundation had developed the variety of weaving styles, designs and geographic similarities which often confuse purchasers.
Antique Oriental rugs, made through the 19th century are rare but are found today, along with the modern reproductions found in most stores. These rugs incorporate the deep, rich color and intricate patterns of Persia, the brighter hues and conventionalized figures of Turkey, the simpler designs and primitive colorings of Turkistan and the Caucasus, and the symbolic ornament of China. Most of the rugs found at Rug Weavers are from our various weaving centers spread across the major weaving centers in India, Afghanistan, Pakistan.

The result is a beautiful, warm and enigmatic custom blend, reminiscent of traditional Persia, a nod to his famous carpet designs.

The packaging has a modern, sleek monochrome design. With environmental responsibility at the heart of the Rug Weavers brand, the candles packaging and container are also sustainable. Poured by hand, the range is made from 100% certified vegetable soy wax produced from renewable plant resources, with natural cotton wicks. As such, the candles benefit from being biodegradable and recyclable, as well as producing less soot, therefore burning clean. The soy wax allows the candle to last longer as it is burning at a cooler temperature, resulting in you enjoying your candle for longer.

we strive to create beautiful, colorful and alluring designs. We offer a broad range of hand knotted rugs combining creative ideas and design experience that inspire the imagination. Founded in 2010 by artist Erbil Tezcan, Wool & Silk started out very humbly in New Jersey, USA. Since then the company has enjoyed phenomenal growth and success and is the proud recipient of nine international Carpet Design Awards and a German Design Award, while maintaining it’s intimate nature of a boutique-style family business.
With influences from Asian tapestries to modern artwork and the artist’s natural landscape photography, there is nothing conventional about our designs. We are constantly evolving and moving in new directions. We cater to custom needs including wall to wall applications. The majority of our collections are manufactured in Nepal; however, our repertoire includes an Afghan Collection which is manufactured in Afghanistan. While most of our rugs manufactured in Nepal are contemporary in nature, our Afghan Collection is a tribute to traditional designs.
The heart of Wool & Silk comes from the passion and commitment of its founder, Erbil Tezcan. His love of design and color in combination with his knowledge of the hand knotted rug industry translates into rugs as a refined art. A glimpse of life or a flash of light and his eye is envisioning a rug. Erbil’s reflection of the creative process is captured in his remark that his designs “have to be colorful, like our lives.”
